Diana Hayden, who was both Femina Miss India and Miss World 1997 has found herself in trouble. Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Thursday claimed that international beauty pageants were a farce and questioned the rationale behind crowning Diana Hayden “Miss World” 21 years ago.
The BJP leader, however praised Aishwarya Rai for winning the Miss World crown in 1994, saying she “represents the Indian women” in the true sense.
According to Deb, “Indian women did not use cosmetics in the old times. Indians did not use shampoo, they washed their hair with methi water and bathed with mud. These beauty pageant organisers are international marketing mafia, who spotted a huge market in the country. Today, there is a beauty parlour in every corner of the country.”
“Whoever contested the international beauty pageants won. For five consecutive years, we won the Miss World/Miss Universe awards. Diana Hayden won it too. Do you think she should have won the title?” Deb said.
Unsurprisingly, Deb was both criticised and ridiculed for his comments on how an Indian woman “should” look.
Activist Kavita Krishnan termed his comments as “stupid, sexist and communal”.

Coming back to Dianna Hayden, she was born in Hyderabad and started her career with the movie “Ab Bass”. She was also a contestant in the reality show Bigg Boss in 2008
According to Wikipedia, before Dianna Hayden began modeling, she worked for an event management company called Encore. She then worked as a Public Relations Officer at BMG Crescendo, where she assisted in managing the careers of singers Anaida and Mehnaz Hoosein. On Anaida’s recommendation, she entered herself into the Miss India contest in 1997.
Diana Hayden has won the Femina Miss India World crown in 1997 and then went on to win the Miss World crown in the same year. By doing so, she became the third Indian woman to win the Miss World pageant, after Reita Faria in 1966 and Aishwarya Rai in 1994.
